I must take a rest period everyday and I had not. I guess we learn the hard way. I just thought if I felt better, I needed to get as much done as possible while I could, but now I know that was not the best thing to do. This isn’t like getting over a cold or flu, but an entirely different type of recovery and healing time.

What really took me by surprise was in the wee hours of the night around 12:30 am, I was hit with an intense, throbbing, pressure pain in my low back. There was absolutely no position of comfort that I could find, but I didn’t want to take something for pain, because I needed to take it with food. I am not the sort of person that likes to eat in the middle of the night. It is like trying to swallow dust. I am never hungry at night. I did finally get up after several hours and take a couple of Tylenol’s, and it did ease it, but it wasn’t quite enough.

I called the oncology office, (I feel like a pest, because I am calling them so frequently), and asked about this pain and how to manage it. The nurse told me it was a side effect of the injection I receive on the day after my chemo to build my white cell count. The pain is a result of the drug causing my bone marrow to rapidly produce white blood cells. She said that it is peaking at this time and will ease off in two or three days. I was very glad to hear that. I was thinking that if I was going to have that intense of pain every single day for four months, I would never get any sleep or rest. She told me to take Claritin and a pain pill. I had some stronger pills leftover from my surgery, so I took those and just made sure I ate something. And I decided I would just eat something in the middle of the night if I needed medication for pain, especially now that I know it is temporary.

My sister and her husband came to visit this week and it has been a nice visit. They don’t expect me to be Miss Energetic, so when I feel tired, I just go lay down. It is just nice to have family around and we are having a very pleasant visit.

My sister is actually helping me reorganize a cabinet and I am very happy about that. She likes doing that where I am not fond of doing it. I like things to be organized, I just don’t like the process. It was much easier to throw stuff away with someone helping me, and we actually filled the trash bin, and she claimed a few items for her projects that she does. I was very happy with that.

Yesterday, when I finally got the pain under control, we all went to a matinee in SLO, and I was able to tolerate the whole time great. I was happy to be able to do something fun. Then we walked around the book store just because we four have always liked that activity. I started getting tired, so we were walking to the car and I thought maybe I could tolerate going a restaurant so they wouldn’t need to cook. We got our food and just as we were starting to eat, the pain medicine wore off and here we are in public and I am in intense pain. We quickly got containers for our food and Pete got the car for us to go home. I am the spoil sport I guess, but it can not be helped. I told everyone that I think if I am going to do any outings, it needs to be one thing only and then rest time for me. I am still in the learning curve with this whole process. I was still glad to have done something fun. And I didn’t feel at risk for infection because my body is in super overdrive producing those white blood cells.

We finished our dinners at home and I of course took my pain medicine, and we had a quiet rest of the night. I felt like a vegetable, so we watched yet another movie on Netflix streaming which was yet an enjoyable time, but it ended very late. We were getting ready for bed, although Pete was already asleep, and my sister was at the dining room table with her lap top catching up on her email. I was in the bedroom and heard a knocking on the door and thought it was my sister or brother-in-law. Shortly after that, Steve yelled out, “Pete, call 911!”. We both ran out to see what was going on, and both he and my sister said that there was a prowler looking into the house at the sliding glass door. Steve turned on the light and both of them got a very good look at them. The guy ran off and we found the gate propped open with a brick and the screen door was broken open. I called my next door neighbor because I was afraid something was wrong over there because the dogs didn’t bark. They always bark on that side, but they were in bed with the owners upstairs watching TV, so the dogs didn’t hear the guy. These are big dogs, but big loves. The police came and since Steve and Suzanne had a very excellent view of the guy, they gave the cops a full description. Steve is a police officer and the cops were communicating with all the police codes and such which was Greek to me. There was a car down the street that had been broken into, so the police were actually already in the neighborhood when we called 911. After they looked at the minor damage to the screen door, and got the description from Steve, they said that they had someone detained up the next block, so Steve was taken over there to ID him. It was the guy, so I am glad that they caught him. He was very intoxicated, so he was arrested for being intoxicated in public. We are guessing that the guy was so intoxicated that he didn’t remember where the party was and thought it was our house. The police said that there was a party two blocks over. I am not sure if he was the one who broke into the neighbor’s car, but they are dealing with that one.

So in my healing time, I had a bit of an adventure and excitement. Today should be a restful day and I think we all deserve it after such an evening. A little flavor added to my week. I expect to feel better today, and actually took some pain medicine as soon as I felt the ache coming on since that is how it started yesterday.

I did have a better day on the 28th, and then on the 29th, I realize that I did too much and I was very tired.
