I always try to do something to celebrate on the 4th of July. On most years, Pete and I like to visit my sister and her family down in Southern California because they have the best fireworks down there–they pale here in comparison. We usually go to the Los Alamitos training base<\/a> early afternoon where they have a whole family event going on. Quite the to-do there. There are bands, reenactments of historical events, bounce houses for the children (major huge ones!), food booths, and of course old and new tanks and military war machines on display which there are men to explain what they do and stories and the like. People take picnic dinners too if they do not want to be subject to the ‘Fair Food.’ I think that is what my nephew and his family always did; they brought food and snacks for the family. I think Pete and I may have bought sandwiches or we just ate what my sister and her husband put together. Then in the late evening, after some reenactments and bands and speeches and hoopla, the fireworks would start. They were literally over your head! And amazing! Now they have fireworks<\/em>!<\/p>\n

When Pete and I lived in Southern California years ago, we used to live in house near Anaheim and we just went out on our front lawn or back yard and we could watch the fireworks from Disneyland every night during the summer and on the 4th of July. We didn’t even need to go anywhere. It came to us.<\/p>\n

Since we have moved up to the Central Coast, it is iffy on the 4th if we will even be able to see the fireworks because of the fog. All morning today it was foggy here in Los Osos and even in San Luis Obispo. It would have been nice to go visit my family, but I knew I was going to not feel my best for actually doing anything today after receiving my chemotherapy last Thursday.<\/p>\n

Last night, I did not feel well and didn’t sleep all night, so that pretty much determined how I was going to feel all day. I got up this morning and instant-messaged my mother-in-law, then I went back to bed for a while because I really wasn’t feeling good. I got back up late morning and decided that I wanted to do something<\/em> for the 4th, so after I got ready we drove into San Luis Obispo and went to a bar-b-que restaurant for pulled pork sandwich and coleslaw. I thought a bar-b-que sounded like a 4th of July thing, and that was as good as it was going to get without actually starting a grill. I had no energy for at all and I wanted to make it easy on Peter. Then I could say I did something on the 4th. I have to admit though, the chemotherapy has really made my mouth taste like metal and the food didn’t taste as good as I had imagined. Disappointing.<\/p>\n

I wanted to go to an afternoon movie since I am missing all the great summer shows out there, but once I was in town my body told me it was way over the top; so after lunch we came home and I pretty much crashed for the rest of the day. Pete took a nap also. I am sure all of this is too much on him as well, so he deserves a much needed rest. I wanted to see people because that is what I like to do on this particular holiday, but I have no energy and I am really hurting from the chemo as well. This is just what it is for this year. Next year I will be in a different and healthy place, so that is what matters right now. Just getting well is my goal for this year.<\/p>\n

We have had a couple of invites to drive somewhere to see the fireworks and I would love it very much. Spend a little time with a friend\/friends and husband, but I am not feeling energetic at all. I am most likely going to lay low and watch a movie. My body wants to recover this week, and I need to listen to its signals.<\/p>\n

We wish everyone a very blessed 4th of July holiday<\/strong> and may everyone reflect on our freedoms that we gained from what this country fought for. Today, the 4th sort of has a new meaning in that I am fighting for my life right now, and so the symbolism is appropriate.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
