Friday, I went into the Oncologist’s office to get my blood drawn from my medi-port, and then have it flushed. The port was was a bit problematic, so it was really draggy in the blood draw. The nurse asked me if I had it flushed every four weeks or six weeks, and I told her that this was six weeks, but maybe if it is going to be giving us trouble, that I should change it to every four weeks. It isn’t something I really want to do, but I am interested in keeping it functioning well just in case it is needed in the future. Hopefully it will not and I pray for no return of cancer ever again.
One of the doctors did tell me that there are people who keep theirs forever. I don’t plan on ever having cancer again, but I don’t really like the port to be there forever myself. It isn’t very attractive at all, and I can not wear my scoop neck tops anymore with out wearing something underneath that covers it or hides it.
The nurs
e who drew my blood and flushed my port, told me she also has a medi-port and she is being treated for colon cancer. She looked young to me, so it is an awful thing that young people are struck with this ugly disease too. She said she is also done with her chemotherapy, but the doctor said that if the cancer does return, it is usually within the first year, so they recommend keeping the medi-port for at least a year if not a little longer. So I will have to endure the ugly thing for at least into the next year as well.
My mother-in-law, Cass is still visiting with me, so she went with me to SLO to the oncologist, so we decided to go to Splash Cafe for lunch. We were going to pick up Pete, but he had a meeting that he had to be back at 1 pm, and we wouldn’t have been done that quickly. Too bad because we were there, but it just wasn’t enough time. The two of us had a great time though. I was hurting some when I got home, so the two of us rested after we prepared some things ahead of time for dinner, and finished reading our books. A good restful afternoon.
