A Hairy Situation

This morning I got up to get ready for my second installment of chemo, and while I was washing my hair in the shower, hair just came in huge wads in my hands. It wouldn’t stop, and I couldn’t believe how much was just coming off my head so easily, so fast. It was a bit disconcerting, but I was aware that it was coming. I just thought it would be more gradual. Some hair was coming out yesterday, but today it was rapidly occurring. At this rate, I could be bald by Easter Sunday. It might be time to give it a shave real soon.

The doctor went over my lab results, and she said that they were good. So the injection I get the following day of chemo really helps to get my white blood cells at a good level. She also had done a test called Oncotype, and the results of that test indicated that the cancer I have is an aggressive one. She said that I am on the appropriate treatment plan.

While I was sitting and sort of dozing, receiving my treatment, and my friend that came with me doing her computer stuff on her lap top, I opened my eyes and there was an old friend looking at me. Wow! How did you know I was here? He said he was in to see his oncologist and he saw me there, so he came up to say hi and see how I was doing. We ended up catching up a bit and having a nice chat, so it made for a pleasant treatment day. There is nothing better than to be around special friends and I had two of them there with me today. I am blessed.

Anyway, I am going to go try to take a short walk even though I am tired, and it is windy. I am going to wear my knitted hats and caps now. My head is beginning to have the thin look in the hair department, but then I knew it was coming. I have a hat I can wear on Sunday, and since it is Easter Sunday, it will be very appropriate.

  1. Good to see you today. My love and prayers are with you. My great love to Pete. Tell him I will check in with him soon. Maybe some lunch. I will keep checking in. Great grace to you! Love you. Rich

  2. Hi Diane,
I thought this would be the day for the hair loss—it’s usually right on 2 weeks. Two weeks after my first chemo, I screamed when a big clump of gray hair washed down my leg when I was showering because I thought it was a mouse!

I’m in town if you need anything more than thoughts and prayers.
