A Surprise From Woods Humane Society

I was able to go to my friend’s birthday party on Sunday evening and enjoy meeting some new people and seeing some people I hadn’t seen for a long time. I really wanted to go to her party since she is a very dear friend.

My last cycle had hit hard on the whole weekend, so I hadn’t been sure that I was going to make it, but it turned out well. I even felt fairly well during the day and was able to walk my dog client, Bert. It was a beautiful warm day, so we had a great walk. I even went to the Monday Farmer’s Market to walk around with a friend and get some juicing vegetables.

By the time evening came though, I really was starting to not feel well. It finally kicked in, and I just had to lay low the rest of the evening.

Today is Tuesday, and I really wasn’t feeling well at all, but a friend from Woods Humane Society called and said that my friends at Woods had something for me and she was going to deliver it today at 10 am. She had called yesterday evening, so it was enough to at least motivate myself to get myself together.

Pete and I have put in a lot of volunteer time into Woods Humane Society in the past couple of years by helping to train and spend time with the dogs there to prepare them for adoption. Since I had started my chemotherapy, I emailed the director and had told him that I was not able to volunteer at this time because of my treatments, and how fatigued I was. I told him that we would resume when I was well and past all my treatments and surgeries.

My friend, Cindy came and brought the gift from everyone from Woods which was very nice, and she also brought a ‘Woodie’ dog to visit me. A sweet little dog which I wonder why he hasn’t been adopted yet, but I thought it very nice that she brought me a dog to visit me and enjoy a little doggie time. The gift was a pretty shirt from one of the last fund raising events that Woods was involved in called “Wine4Paws”. It was the wine tasting event on the weekend where people go to different wineries and taste wine and the funds go towards Woods. There was also a lovely bottle of Zinfandel from the winery called, “Chumeia”. I have never tried their wine, but I will shortly try it when I finish my chemotherapy. It is recommended not to drink alcohol while on chemotherapy. Everything tastes different anyway, and I would rather save the wine when my taste buds are back to normal. Just two more months of chemo!!!

My friend from Woods also included a sweet card and a gift certificate to a healthfood store in Morro Bay. Very nice indeed!

I was very happy for my visit and the thoughtful gifts from our friends at Woods Humane Society. Pete and I have loved the volunteer involvement with the outreaches because of the great people we meet, and also how it has helped the furry friends as well.

I rested the rest of the day, since it was a down day for me. This is the last hard chemotherapy, and although the next four cycles still have side effects, I was promised that it will not be as brutal. I am all for that. Yesterday evening I kept saying that I am pretty done with this feeling, thank you very much!

  1. Dianne, How wonderful to have a pup visit! It’s so important to rest when you feel it is needed. Glad to hear that you were able to get out to have some fun times at a gathering of friends.

    • It was indeed a wonderful dog visit. I hope the little guy gets adopted. I was pleased that I felt well enough to spend some time with friends and celebrate my friend’s birthday. I have some sweet memories to remember in this difficult season.
